Which of course is the signal that we've hit gardening time here in the Southern Tier. I had a great weekend. Last Friday . . . not so much. So let's start there and end on a high point, shall we?

Friday: Intent was to get the summer tires on the car and the snow tires into storage. Had appointment. Had tires in basement. What didn't I have? The new code to the door to the basement, changed a few weeks ago by the people that run the art gallery on the first floor. So I spent the morning before the appointment desperately trying to find someone who could tell me the code, with no one looking at emails (apparently) or answering phones or replying to messages. So I had to cancel the appointment. This pissed me off royally, which meant that any chance of writing for the day was also shot. So I graded papers. If figured if I was already pissed, then grading the papers wouldn't hurt because I couldn't get more pissed (which is usually what happens when I grade papers). So Friday died a long and horribly pissy death. Only accomplishment? Graded papers.

Enter Saturday and Sunday. Got the tires from the basement, got the car to the shop, got the tires changed. The weekend was also supposed to be exceptionally sunny and warm and nice, so the new goal (besides finishing the grading) was to garden! Which is what I did, both yesterday and today. I got tons of stuff in, including--peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, artichokes (it's an experiment), creeping flox, verbena, and primroses. I intended to put in peas, beans, corn, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and a bunch of other things, but I burned out. Literally. I always get a sunburn when spring starts and I begin the planting. Doesn't matter what I do. I guess 5 hours under the sun playing in dirt on the roof of your building in downtown Binghamton just guarantees a sunburn. But I'll survive.

And now I have things I can watch grow.

I think you need a sunblock supervisor. I have one, they work great. I almost went for a 3.5 hour bike ride today without sunblock, but luckily my supervisor stepped in and handed me a bottle of spf 45 for the face and 30 for the rest. Of course, I somehow applied to face, neck and legs, missing arms entirely.

It sounds like your garden is taking shape. We've only planted clamatis and climbing roses, the veggies go in later this week or next weekend.

Hmm. Sunburn. I get sunburnt everytime I spend an hour or so outside in the summer. All summer. I think it has something to do with the Irish part of my German/Irish ancestry.

You can grow stuff now? In April? It was raining, and 44 degrees today. Darn for being in Wisconsin I guess. :-)

Sunburn bad.

I didn't get sunburned this weekend - instead I bought and read The Vacant Throne.

I win. ;)

My mom gardens a lot. Mostly she sticks to roses and other flowers, because the cherry tomatoes and basil plants (really all the herbs, which she uses very often) never seem to last long.

I avoid sunburns by being a hermit. It's probably best to risk it sometimes, though. :)
