OK, here's another author you should be checking out, especially if you're into sci-fi or the apocalyptic America novels: Jeff Carlson. I met Jeff at Norwescon a few weeks back and we kept running into each other at the con thereafter. I figure it's a sign I should check out his work. *grin* In any case, Jeff was there because his second novel, Plague War, was a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award, which is announced at Norwescon every year I believe. His first book, Plague Year, has also gotten some critical acclaim, is an international bestseller, and has already been optioned for film rights. His third novel, Plague Zone, is due out right after Thanksgiving. I haven't read any of his books yet, but I've put them on my buy list and intend to get around to them shortly, especially after reading his introduction. He's got a cool take on the apocalyptic storyline! Plus he's got a really cool website, with free fiction, videos, contests and more.

I was also informed that I should tell you all that "I am the man." *grin*

In any case, I should probably hand this over to Jeff so he can convince you that his books rock. So here he is:

The author in his own words:

The core concepts behind Plague Year were easy. I grew up in northern
California, at sea-level, and yet the San Francisco Bay Area is just a
three-hour drive from the Sierra mountains. I'm a lifelong skier and
backpacker. My friends and I didn't ever want to go back to work. As a
writer, I'm always looking for cool ideas, and I began to think, "What if we
couldn't go home again?"

Then I took it a step further: What if no one could ever go back home again?

Imagine if the geopolitical map was squeezed up into the world's highest
peaks and everywhere else was a death zone. How would Earth's nations react?

Mayhem ensues.

And I'm sure it does (the mayhem ensuing thing). And like I said, I'm definitely interested in reading these books now. In fact, I'm off to order them right this minute. What are you guys waiting for?
