Release Party Wrap-Up!
Jan. 23rd, 2009 09:51 pmSo the release party tonight at River Read Books in Binghamton, NY was . . . a rousing success! Thanks to everyone who came!
But I have to admit that it didn't look good at the beginning. At the official start time there were . . . 2 people there.
pbray was there for friendly support, and Kat was there to have her hardcover copy of the third book signed. She'd bought it ages ago but hadn't had a chance to catch me at any of my various events to get it signed. The three of us chatted and drank a little wine, snacked, etc . . . and I figured that might be it for the night.
But lo! People I didn't know arrived! At first I thought they'd just randomly wandered in, but it turns out they WERE there to see me. I signed their hardcover copies that they'd bought earlier and chatted with them and LO! Cecil came in with her husband! She takes spin classes with me. And while I was chatting with her and her husband even more people arrived. Including my PhD advisor. Let me tell you, that little aprehensive fear of your advisor never goes away, even though they no longer control your future. *grin* But I talked to him and at that point there were enough people there--all taking seats--that it appeared I'd actually have to do my reading.
So I read the first few pages of Vacant Throne (we were there to celebrate it's release in paperback remember). I'd planned on taking a few questions and then moving on and reading from Well of Sorrows. But when I opened it up for questions there were far more than I'd anticipated. It was a good question/answer session, ranging from how I wrote, when I first started writing, all the way to new projects and I hoped for in the future. By the time the questions wound down, it was 8pm. So no reading from the newest book. But I had a blast and I hope that everyone else enjoyed it too.
As usual, it took me a while to settle down. I didn't relax until after the reading, when the questions started. When I realized that they actually HAD questions and were interested in the answers, my shoulders dropped and I realized I'd been all tensed up. I also noticed that I wasn't guarded anymore with my answers, that I'd opened up. And after that it was fun. Too bad I can't go in unguarded. I guess I'm always worried that no one will show or that people won't have a good time, until I realize that they did show and are, and then things are good.
But anyways . . . tomorrow!
pbray and I are heading out to Hackensack, NY for a signing at the B&N there. So if you're in the area, come see us, along with Daryl Gregory, S.C. Butler, and Barbara Campbell. We'll be there from 2-4pm.
