Revision Update--I'm Screwed
Jun. 21st, 2008 07:18 pmSo, after surviving the food poisoning (I woke up much better this morning after pretty much trembling my way through game night last night with
pbray and
jennifer_dunne), I got back to the revisions today. Here's the update:
I've cut 7 pages. That's 1750 words. I'm already through 6 chapters out of the 25 chapters in the book.
I'm screwed.
How the hell am I going to cut 80,000 words at this rate? Gah!!!
I've spent the last few hours taking deep breaths and trying to remain calm. It doesn't help that I'm in a "this novel sucks" phase right now either. But I did end the last chapter with "that's not that bad" so maybe I'm swinging to the good side.
*sigh* In any case, I've considered each scene and what it does and asked myself whether or not it's necessary, and so far I've come up with it's necessary for each and every one. Well, except for parts of scenes that I cut out completely. I've stored those in a "cuttext" file in case I want to refer back to them. But I'll have to consider the scenes in the two chapters I revised again tomorrow. I need to find more to cut out, or at least more to mark as "less necessary" than others for when I come back in desperate need of thousands of words left to cut later.
I don't know. Maybe I can cut the preparation for the journey section, just skip to right before they leave. But then I'd lose the discontent that leads to the revolt later on. Although that's just "behind the scenes", not the main story. So perhaps . . .
I'll flag it as a possibility. Not sure what else I can flag though.
Ugh. I knew this wasn't going to be easy.
